Bird-safe : anti-collision glass.

The Madras® Bird-Safe line is specially designed to prevent the risk of collisions. As already widely documented, the use of continuous glazing on façades is casing a massacre of birds, which are deceived by reflections of the sky and surrounding vegetation or by the very transparency of glass. More and more countries are legislating to make the construction industry bird-friendly.

► The interruption of glazed surfaces with patterns of opaque dots or stripes has proved one of the best solutions for preventing collisions because it helps birds perceive transparent surfaces as obstacles.

► The patterns used comply with the official indications – the 2” x 4” rule in particular – based on the results of international experimentation.

► They are produced by a very delicate satin finish and are not altered by light or atmospheric agents. This particular Madras® finish is visible for birds but not invasive for human eyes.

► All the articles are available on both the basic float glass and on coated glass (Low-E, reflective, solar control, etc.). The dot-patterned surface must be side 1.

FAÇADES

Glazed façades are one of the main causes of collision for birds, especially in buildings that lie on migration routes. Thousands of birds die in the daytime due to the transparency of or reflections in glazed surfaces and also at night because they’re attracted by light sources. Special contrasting patterns (in terms of both colour and opacity) make these surfaces visible to birds’ eyes because they interrupt uniformity. Made with the Madras® Bird-Safe production process – involving a satin finish of the glass – this glazing is not altered by light or atmospheric agents and is easy to maintain.

SOUND BARRIERS

Birds are not able to perceive as obstacles glazing that reflects the sky or trees and bushes. So the closer a glazed structure is to nature, the more dangerous it is unless made recognizable by suitable markings. Madras® Bird-Safe glass products – with patterns recommended by the most recent ornithological studies – are designed to make such structures visible to birds’ eyes.

BUS STOPS

Glass bus stop shelters are another big collision risk for birds. Madras® Bird-Safe glass products have patterns that have been recommended by the most recent ornithological studies and are useful for making such structures visible to birds’ eyes. The dots and stripes used do not impede the vision of people waiting at such stops.

PARAPETS

Transparent glass parapets may appear perfectly transparent or reflect the sky and surrounding vegetation, depending on the angle of vision. Either way, they are dangerous for birds because their eyes don’t see them. Madras® Bird-Safe glass products have characteristics in line with the results of the scientific experiments carried out to date: they make transparent glass visible to birds’ eyes because they interrupt its uniformity.

WINDOWS

Extensive use of windows and continuous glazing tricks birds into trying to fly through buildings. Patterns recognizable by their eyes have been subjected to thorough scientific experimentation and results have proved positive. Involving a very delicate satin finish, the Madras® production process for the Bird-Safe glass line makes the patterns visible to birds from the outside but not so impactful as to disturb human vision from the inside.
